Reliability-Centered Maintenance

Predictive maintenance as a cost-effective measure to increase system availability

A system breakdown is never desirable but sometimes inevitable. It is impossible to produce a design that never fails. Depending on the task a certain system is designed to execute a failure can not only be undesirable but also hazardous or even catastrophic. Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a proven and widely recognized methodology for identification of preventive maintenance and support actions that can be done to improve system availability by reducing the severity and frequency of failures. 

The concept has its origin in the commercial aviation industry. Owing to the catastrophic potential of failures during the flight of an aircraft, the industry started to investigate the possibility of developing a methodological approach to analyzing a system design to identify maintenance that could be performed on a scheduled basis that has the potential to improve system reliability by avoiding failures. Systecon has developed models that get to the heart of RCM. More specifically, the effect preventive maintenance has on corrective maintenance has been investigated and modeled. The goal is to develop a method to schedule the frequency of preventive maintenance cost-effectively. Too much preventive maintenance can result in degradation of system availability, while too little may lead to failure with possible severe consequences. A number of potential extensions to the model have been identified and will form the basis of this thesis. 

The objective is to: 

1. Extend the model to include the effect of imperfect reset for component that has undergone overhaul. 

2. Extend the model to cover synchronization of overhaul of components with overarching service intervals.
